Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour For structure and tenderness.
  • 2 teaspoons sugar To feed the yeast.
  • 1 teaspoon salt For flavor.
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast Can substitute with instant yeast.
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water Temperature around 105–110°F / 40–43°C.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Extra-virgin for flavor or substitute with melted butter.

Method

Preparation
  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Create a well in the center.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture and olive oil into the flour well. Mix into a shaggy dough.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled.
Baking
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a loaf pan.
  2. Deflate the risen dough and shape it into a loaf. Place seam-side down in the pan.
  3. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes until just above rim of the pan.
  4. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  5. Cool on a rack for 20-30 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Brush with melted butter after baking for a soft crust; for a crispy crust, mist the oven with water at the start.
