Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Weigh for accuracy; 4 cups can vary.
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast One packet; active dry yeast can be used with longer rise time.
  • 2 tablespoons sugar Adds mild sweetness; can substitute honey.
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt Avoid direct contact with yeast to ensure rise.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F/43°C) Use a thermometer to ensure proper temperature.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter Fat helps keep bread soft; can omit for firmer texture.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. Pour in warm water and olive oil or melted butter. Stir gently until the dough pulls together into a shaggy mass.
First Rise
  1. Cover the bowl tightly and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
Shaping
  1. Lightly flour the surface, turn out the dough, and shape it into a smooth ball. Place it in a greased loaf pan seam-side down.
  2. Cover and let rise for 30 to 45 minutes until puffy and slightly above rim.
Baking
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  2. Remove from the pan and cool on a wire rack before slicing.
