Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour Choose freshly milled or well-stored for best rise.
  • 1 tablespoon Baking Powder Use a fresh can for best results.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda Optional, use if incorporating buttermilk.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper Add any additional seasonings as desired.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 large Egg Room temperature for better incorporation.
  • 1 cup Whole Milk Can be substituted with buttermilk.
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter, melted For added richness.
Cheese
  • 2 cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese, grated 1 1/2 cups for batter, 1/2 cup for topping.
Optional Flavorings
  • to taste Garlic powder, onion powder, dried mustard powder, fresh chives, green onions, dried oregano For custom flavors.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, optional baking soda, salt, black pepper, and any additional seasoning.
  3. In a separate bowl, lightly beat the egg, then whisk in the whole milk and melted butter until smooth.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients until just mixed; avoid overmixing.
  5. Fold in 1 1/2 cups of grated cheddar, reserving 1/2 cup for the topping.
  6. Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and sprinkle the remaining cheddar on top.
Baking
  1. Bake for 45–55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  2. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For extra flavor, experiment with herbs and spices. Use fresh, block cheese for better melting and flavor. Allow the loaf to cool before slicing to prevent crumbling.
